When a student becomes an Auggie, they aren't the only one going through a transition period. Their family, friends, and other close community members may find their roles changing as they now support a college student. Here you can find some advice for supporting your Auggie, as well as tips for yourself as you adjust to this new relationship. We are so happy to have you as a part of the Augsburg community!

What to expect
- A range of emotions - Your student is probably feeling anxious, excited, overwhelmed, or any combination of emotions about finally heading off to college. As their supporter, you can help them by giving them space to feel those emotions and letting them know you are there to support them unconditionally.
- Change - College is a time for self discovery. If it seems like your student is acting or communicating with you differently, don't panic! Change isn't necessarily a bad thing. The best thing you can do is listen to what they need, and be patient as they navigate their transition into adulthood.
- Communication with the University - If your student isn't keeping you updated about how they're doing in school, it may be tempting to reach out to the university directly. Augsburg University can only share a student's information with the student themselves.
What you can do
- You can get support too - Check out the Augsburg Center for Wellness & Counseling's page for parents.
- Be ready to help your student, but don't feel the need to hover - Augsburg has many resources on campus to support student success. Check out our student help page or the Gage Center for Student Success to see what's available to them.
- Send them a care package - A little gesture can go a long way. If your student is feeling homesick or out of place in this new environment, a care package or a letter can help remind them that they are not alone.
