About the Library and Our Collections

Our Mission

Lindell Library empowers learners to search for and think critically about information both within the Augsburg Community and beyond.

History of the Library

Sign from circa 1947 announcing the future location of what was to be Sverdrup Library. The building in the background is Augsburg's first Old Main, 1872–1948. View more historical photographs by visiting the University Archives.
  • In 1872, when Augsburg moved from Marshall, Wisconsin, to Minneapolis, the library had 472 volumes. Students who ran the library created an organization called the Idun Society.
  • By 1900, Augsburg had three separate library collections that were each managed by a different group on campus. That year, the three groups created a Library Board overseen by a faculty advisor.
  • In 1919, the library had grown to 12,000 volumes.
  • During the 1920s and 1930s, Augsburg struggled to expand the library, which was necessary in order to meet accreditation standards. It was located in the basement of Old Main.
  • From 1955 to 1997, students, faculty, and staff used George Sverdrup Library, now Sverdrup Hall.
  • Since 1997, the James G. Lindell Family Library has carried on the proud tradition of connecting our community to the resources they need.

Library Policies

Requesting Books

You can request books from the other libraries by clicking on the “Request Item” button in the book record. In most cases, requested books will be delivered to Augsburg within a week.

If you have any problems requesting books, contact the Research Desk at 612-330-1604.

Checking out

Your Augsburg ID must be registered in the library’s online system before you can use many library services. ID cards are made at the Circulation Desk on the Street level of the library. An Augsburg ID does not entitle you to check out materials from other libraries, you will need to request those materials through Interlibrary Loan.

Augsburg alumni can apply for a “Lindell Library Borrowing Card” at the Street Level Circulation Desk.

You are responsible for the timely return of all material borrowed on your ID, whether or not you receive any reminder of overdue notices from the library. Loan periods vary, so be certain you understand the due date for all material at the time of check-out. If the due date changes, we will contact you at your AugNet e-mail address.

The library system will send reminder notices of overdue material each week that the item is overdue to your AugNet e-mail account. If the item is eligible for renewal and you want to renew it, choose one of the methods for renewing the item outlined in the email.

Four weeks after the due date, books are considered lost and subject to billing for replacement. The overdue and billing process is accelerated for items with shorter checkout periods. The minimum replacement charge for all items is $65, including a nonrefundable processing fee. All replacement bills are referred to the Business Office, and appear on your monthly fee statement. All correspondence about the overdue and billing process take place via email.

Departments are financially responsible for materials checked out by their faculty members, and department chairs may be notified of materials that need to be billed.
