Books
Books by and about individual writers are on the library's Lower Level. Authors writing in American aboriginal languages can be found at call numbers starting with 897, which includes English translations.
American Indian and First Nations authors who write in English are found at call numbers starting with 81 (American and Canadian authors). This section is huge, however, so it's best to search by author name or the title of the work. (Learn more about finding literature.)
Alternatively, search by "Indians of North America" or a tribe and a specific genre or topic:
- Indians of North America authors
- Indians of North America plays
- Ojibwe folklore
Looking for children's books?
Add juvenile literature to your search.
You can also browse the Native American children's books on the Lower Level of Lindell at call numbers starting with E, up to E 100. The books are on the low shelving units.

Native American Literatures: An Encyclopedia of Works, Characters, Authors, and Themes by Call Number: Reference PS153.I52 W47 1999With authors, works, and events, this encyclopedia is notable for its inclusion of key fictional characters as separate entries.
A Broken Flute: The Native Experience in Books for Children by Call Number: Reference PN1009.5.I53 B76 2005Look here for criticism and analysis of the depiction of American Indians in children's literature, including cultural authenticity and historical accuracy. This work reviews hundreds of individual books.
The Greenwood Encyclopedia of Multiethnic American Literature by Call Number: Reference PS153.M56 G74 2005 v.1–5Covering ethnic literature broadly, this set includes authors, works, genres, and stereotypes associated with particular groups. See the entries for Native American Literature in v. 1, p. xxxv.

- Native American Authors Project – Internet Public LibraryFind American Indian authors by name, tribe, or title. This site includes short biographies, bibliographies of works, and links to other sources.
